How often will I receive my FICO® Score?
Program participants will receive their updated FICO® Auto Score 8 based on Equifax Data on a monthly basis, when available.
-
Will receiving my FICO® Score impact my credit?
No. The FICO® Score we provide to you will not impact your credit.
-
Why is my FICO® Score not available?
There are a few possible reasons that your FICO® Score may not be available at this time. These reasons can include:
- You are a new member of FCU. It may take a month or 2 before your score is available as part of our monthly score refresh process
- You have not yet opted in to this free benefit
- You do not have enough credit (loan) history to have a score
- Your score was temporarily unavailable at the time of our monthly score refresh process
- You opted out of this benefit
-
Where does the information used to calculate my FICO® Score come from?
A FICO® Score is based on the credit information in a credit file with a particular consumer reporting agency (CRA) at the time the score is calculated. The information in your credit files is supplied by lenders, collection agencies and court records. Not all lenders report to all three major CRAs. The FICO® Score that we provide to you is based on data from your Equifax report as of the ‘pulled on date’ shown with your score.
-
What are key score factors?
When a lender receives a FICO® Score, "key score factors" are also delivered, which explain the top factors from the information in the credit report that affected the score. The order in which FICO® Score factors are listed is important. The first indicates the area that most affected that particular FICO® Score and the second is the next significant area. Knowing these score factors can help you better understand your financial health over time. However, if you already have a high FICO® Score (usually in the mid-700s or higher), score factors are informative but, not as significant since they represent very marginal areas where your score was affected.
-
Why is my FICO® Score different than other scores I’ve seen?
There are many different credit scores available to consumers and lenders. FICO® Scores are the credit scores used by most lenders, and different lenders may use different versions of FICO® Scores. In addition, FICO® Scores are based on credit file data from a particular consumer reporting agency, so differences in your credit files may create differences in your FICO® Scores. The FICO® Auto Score 8 based on Equifax Data that is being made available to you through this program is the specific score that FCU uses to manage your account. When reviewing a score, take note of the score date, consumer reporting agency credit file source, score type, and range for that particular score.
-
Why do FICO® Scores fluctuate/change?
There are many reasons why a score may change. FICO® Scores are calculated each time they are requested, taking into consideration the information that is in your credit file from a particular consumer reporting agency (CRA) at that time. So, as the information in your credit file at that CRA changes, FICO® Scores can also change. Review your key score factors, which explain what factors from your credit report most affected a score. Comparing key score factors from the two different time periods can help identify causes for a change in a FICO® Score. Keep in mind that certain events such as late payments or bankruptcy can lower FICO® Scores quickly.
-
How do I check my credit report?
Because your FICO® Score is based on the information in your credit report, it is important to make sure that the credit report information is accurate. You may get a free copy of your credit report annually. To request a copy of your credit report, please visit: annualcreditreport.com. Please note that your free credit report will not include your FICO® Score.
-
Why are you providing FICO® Scores?
Reviewing your FICO® Scores can help you learn how lenders view your credit risk and allow you to better understand your financial health.

How do I find out what is the balance on my gift card?
You can find your balance on your gift card one of two ways:
- Call 866-760-3156 to check your balance
- Contact any Florida Credit Union branch
-
How does the gift card work?
The gift card is a prepaid card that can be used most everywhere Visa® debit cards are accepted. Because it’s a prepaid card, spending is limited to the amount of money on the card. When the recipient makes a purchase, that amount is deducted from the card balance.
-
Is the gift card a credit card?
No. The gift card is a prepaid card. While a prepaid card looks similar to a credit card, gift card recipients do not have a line of credit. They can only spend up to the balance on the card.
-
How can I purchase a gift card?
Just visit your nearest branch.
-
How do I activate my gift card and obtain the PIN?
Call the customer support number listed on the back of your gift card to activate your card and receive an assigned PIN.
-
What if the item I want to purchase costs more than the value on my gift card?
When you present your gift card as payment, simply inform the cashier of the value of your card. You can then choose another form of payment for the remaining portion of your purchase.
-
Can I add additional value to the gift card?
No, this card is not reloadable. Once the balance is spent, the card should be cut up and thrown away.
-
What should I do when the merchant’s sales terminal asks me to press ‘Debit’ or ‘Credit’?
You should always press the ‘Credit’ button. Although the gift card is not a credit card, the transaction is processed like one. You should always sign a sales receipt.
-
What if the purchase is denied?
It probably means the card’s available balance is less than the purchase amount. You may inform the merchant of the remaining balance on the card and use another form of payment to pay the difference, subject to the policy of the merchant. Also, please be aware that some merchants (for example, restaurants, car rental agencies, salons, mail-order companies, and cruise lines) pre-authorize for an amount slightly higher than your actual transaction to ensure sufficient funds for tips or incidental expenses. This amount is “held” until the transaction settles to your prepaid card. Only the amount you sign for will ultimately be deducted from your card. Use of the card at automated fuel dispensers requires that a specific minimum balance be available on the card, which is determined by the issuer of the prepaid card, in order to complete the transaction. For example, the issuer may require that there is a minimum balance of $50 on the card in order to utilize the card at an automated fuel dispenser. Again, only the actual amount spent will ultimately be deducted from the card.
-
Do I call if I think there has been a transaction error on my gift card?
If you believe there is an error, such as a purchase that you do not recognize, simply call us at 866-902-6082.
-
Can I use my card for recurring transactions?
No, the gift card may not be used for automatic recurring transactions such as internet service providers or health club fees. The card may not be used for internet gambling or any illegal activity.
-
Can I use my card for online transactions?
Yes, but the card must be registered. After registering, the card will have all the necessary information updated to complete a transaction over the phone or online. Register your Visa® Gift Card by calling the support number listed on the back of your gift card.
The gift card may not be used for automatic recurring transactions such as internet service providers or health club fees. The card may not be used for internet gambling or any illegal activity.

Fundraising and Donation Drives
Florida Credit Union's branches all participate in three annual donation drives: FCU’s School Supply Drive, FCU’s Pet Supply Drive and FCU’s Holiday Food Drive. The proceeds raised at each location are donated to organizations in that branch’s neighborhood. Since the program's inception, we've collected hundreds of pounds of food and supplies and thousands of dollars for worthy recipients.
-
Event & Organization Sponsorship
Non-profit and charity organizations do exceptional work throughout central and northern Florida. Their tireless efforts to help others inspire us at FCU. That's why we regularly offer them financial support through both direct sponsorship and event funding. Recent recipients include:
- Local youth sports teams
- The Education Foundation of Alachua County
- Marion County Education Foundation
- The March of Dimes
- The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life
- Holiday events like Fanfares and Fireworks in Gainesville
- Community staples like the Strawberry Festival in Starke
- Chamber of Commerce events

-
School, Student & Teacher Support
Florida Credit Union was founded in 1954 as the Alachua County Teacher’s Credit Union. Ever since then, we've maintained a strong connection to local schools and education-based organizations. In addition to sponsoring school sports teams, here are two of our ongoing efforts:
- FCU representatives visit nearly 100 schools across the region annually during “FCU’s Back-to-School Teacher Appreciation” period. They provide breakfast or lunch and goody bags to faculty and staff, present a monetary donation to each school, and answer questions about the credit union.
- FCU supports local students with three scholarship opportunities each year. They are the Dr. John C. Rawls Scholarship Fund; the Servin-Ellis Scholarship Fund; and the Buchholz Academy of Finance Scholarship. Awards are based on student scholastic records, future potential, character, and financial need.

How do I make a payment on my home equity loan?
There are many convenient and safe options for you to make a payment on your FCU loan. View your available payments options here.
-
How much of my home’s equity can I borrow?
You can borrow a minimum of $10,000, with a maximum depending on your credit history, available equity in the property and your current monthly debt.
-
What determines my borrowing limit?
The borrowing limit is determined by several factors, including the debt-to-income ratio, credit score, credit history, and financial profile.
-
What is the difference between a Home Equity Loan and a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC)?
A home equity loan is a one-time lump sum paid back in monthly installments. A home equity line of credit, or HELOC, allows you to continually borrow money up to a certain amount. As you pay off the balance, your credit revolves, allowing you to use it again. Unlike a loan, payments are based on amount advanced and not the full loan amount.
-
How is the value of my home determined?
To determine the value of your home accurately, you can use one of these methods: use an online home valuation tool, hire a professional appraiser, or consult a realtor.
-
How long will it take to receive my funds?
Home equity loans can take up to 30 days to fund.
-
Is the interest from a Home Equity Loan or HELOC tax deductible?
The interest from both may be tax deductible if it meets the IRS guidelines.
-
Will there be fees?
FCU pays all closing costs for loans less than $250,000. If the loan is greater than $250,000, then the borrower pays for a title search. If loan is paid off within 24 months of the loan consummation, then the borrower is required to reimburse FCU for any closing costs paid by FCU.

-

-
If I discover I’ve entered an incorrect amount for the deposited check, should I redeposit the check?
No. The system reads the dollar amount written on the front of the check. If necessary, we’ll correct the amount within 2 to 3 business days.
-
The check I deposited was returned. Can I upload the check again?
No, you cannot upload the returned check. Your account will be assessed a return item fee (refer to FCU Fee Schedule) and you will receive a copy of the deposit. If you wish to redeposit the returned check, you may do so by mailing the image of the item to FCU.
-
What if there is a problem with my deposit?
Once you’ve made your deposit, you will get an email confirmation that we’ve received your deposit and are processing it. If there is any problem with the transaction, like insufficient funds or potential fraud, you’ll receive an additional email with further instructions.
-
Why doesn't my current balance reflect my recent deposit?
There may be a problem that requires staff to review the image of the check. This process will happen within one business day. Once reviewed, the deposit is reflected in your account.
If you did not receive confirmation, your Mobile Deposit may not have been successful. Please contact FCU Member Support to determine your next step.

How do I make a payment on my mortgage loan?
There are many convenient and safe options for you to make a payment on your FCU loan. View your available payment options here.
-
How much can I afford?
A great rule of thumb to use is 2.5 times your annual household income. If your income is $75,000 annually then a good starting point is $187,500.
-
What documents do I need?
FCU doesn’t require documents upfront from borrowers in order to issue a preapproval letter. A completed mortgage application is needed in order for one of our loan officers to get you preapproved for a mortgage.
After you are preapproved, then the items on this checklist will be needed in order to proceed with the mortgage. These documents can be uploaded to our secured portal. -
What are mortgage points?
Mortgage points, also known as discount points, are fees a homebuyer pays directly to the lender in exchange for a reduced interest rate. One point is 1% of the mortgage loan amount. It’s important to consider how long you’ll own the home and the time it will take to recoup the cost of buying points. Let our MLO help you decide if paying points is a good option for you.
-
Is an appraisal required?
An appraisal is needed on most loans. However, there are some FNMA (conventional) loans that may qualify for an appraisal waiver. This will be determined once we have an application with a known address.
-
Do I find a house first or apply for the loan first?
Either way is fine. If you already have a home in mind feel free to apply. The quickest way to find a home however is to make sure to get pre-approved for the loan first. This will empower you, so that you know what price range to look for. Also, you will know beforehand your potential mortgage payments. A pre-approved letter shows the seller and the realtor that you are a qualified buyer. Realtors will be more inclined to show you homes, and even offer you first preference if there are multiple offers, especially if the other buyers aren’t pre-approved.
-
What is escrow?
When you make your mortgage payment, a monthly portion of it goes towards your taxes and insurance, establishing an escrow account. Escrow accounts are beneficial in that you're able to pay taxes and insurance on a monthly basis instead of a large lump sum payment annually.
If you have any specific questions about your escrow account, please email Escrowinsurance@flcu.org.
-
How can I submit a proof of insurance?
You can submit proof of insurance by emailing the document to Escrowinsurance@flcu.org.

How your accounts are Federally Insured?
From the National Credit Union Administration:
-
Consumer - Important information about procedures for opening a new account
To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account. This means, when you open an account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and other identifying documents.
-
Business - Important information about procedures for opening a new account
To help the government fight financial crime, Federal regulation requires certain financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information about the beneficial owners of legal entity customers. Legal entities can be abused to disguise involvement in terrorist financing, money laundering, tax evasion, corruption, fraud, and other financial crimes. Requiring the disclosure of key individuals who own or control a legal entity (i.e., the beneficial owners) helps law enforcement investigate and prosecute these crimes.

What is the difference between a Will and a Trust?
Wills and Trusts have a lot of overlap, but also a lot of differences.
Wills are simpler documents that let you name guardians for kids and pets, designate where assets go, and specify final arrangements. The simplicity of a Will does come with some drawbacks: a Will offers more limited control over the distribution of assets and often must go through a probate process after death.
Like a Will, a Trust also controls the disposition of assets but provides greater control over when and how your assets are distributed. Trusts only apply to assets held in the Trust, so you will need to transfer assets to the Trust. This makes a Trust a little more complex to set up, but it brings a major benefit. Trusts are also often used to minimize or avoid probate entirely, which can be a huge draw for many and justifies the additional work upfront needed to create a Trust.
Both are ways to say who will receive your assets - Each has different ways of distributing those assets, as well as different advantages and disadvantages. -
How long will it take to complete a Will or Trust?
Most people complete a Will in 15 minutes, and a Trust in about 20 minutes. All your answers are saved as you go, so feel free to pause and come back to pick up where you left off at any time!
