Next Steps After a Loss

Losing a loved one is never easy, and managing their financial matters can feel overwhelming during an already difficult time. We're here to help make the process as straightforward as possible by guiding you through the steps to notify Florida Credit Union, gather the necessary documents, and understand what to expect along the way. While every situation is unique, the information below can help you get started and answer many of the questions families commonly have.

 First Steps

The account settlement process begins with a few important steps. We'll guide you through how to notify Florida Credit Union, what documentation you'll need to provide, and what to expect as we review and settle the member's accounts. While every situation is unique, following these steps can help make the process as smooth as possible.

Notify Florida Credit Union

As soon as you're ready, please notify Florida Credit Union of your loved one's passing. This allows us to begin reviewing the member's accounts, protect them from unauthorized activity, and guide you through the next steps. You can contact us in the way that's most convenient for you using one of the options below:

  • Online: Email askfcu@flcu.org
  • Phone: Call us at 352-377-4141
  • In Person: Visit your local branch
  • Mail to: Attn:
    Deceased Accounts
    PO BOX 5549
    Gainesville, FL 32606

Provide the Required Documentation

Providing the required documentation helps us verify the member's passing and determine who is authorized to manage their accounts. While every situation is unique, the lists below will help you identify the documents that are typically needed based on the account type.

  • Photo ID
  • Certified copy of death certificate
  • Other relevant documents which would include Letters of Administration or Probate Court Orders addressing an account or loan.

Please note that there is no reason to send us a Will as we cannot rely upon it.

Account Review & Settlement

Once you've submitted the required documentation, we'll take it from there. Our team will review the information, process the member's accounts, and work to complete the settlement as efficiently as possible.

Required Documentation

Gathering the right documents can help make the account settlement process go more smoothly. The information below outlines the documentation typically required for different account types. If you're unsure which documents apply to your situation, our team is happy to help guide you through the process.

If the deceased member was the only owner on the account, we'll need documentation to verify their passing and identify the individual authorized to act on behalf of the estate. The required documents may vary depending on whether a beneficiary was designated on the account.

  • A copy of the death certificate
  • One of the following is required if there is no beneficiary listed on the account:
    • A certified copy of probate order
    • Small estate affidavit

If the account was jointly owned, the surviving account owner generally retains access to the account. To update our records, we'll need a copy of the death certificate, and we may need to retitle the account if the deceased member was listed as the primary account holder.

  • A copy of the death certificate
  • Joint owners may continue to use the account, but the account may need to be retitled if primary account holder is deceased.
If the deceased member owned an IRA, we'll need a copy of the death certificate to begin reviewing the account.

If your loved one had a mortgage with Florida Credit Union, we'll need a few documents to update our records and review the loan.  You will need to provide the following:

  • A copy of the death certificate
  • Order determining homestead or Deed showing transfer of property
