How long does the account settlement process take?

Each member is unique and the time to settle each account may vary. Once we are notified of a Member's passing, we will taking the following actions:

• Placing holds on accounts
• Blocking ATM/Debit Cards
• Closing accounts
• Deactivating mobile banking, such as billpay
• Returning government benefits, such as social security

Does Florida Credit Union accept a Last Will and Testament?

No, Florida Credit Union does not accept a Last Will and Testament. The document will need to be submitted to the probate court.

I’d like to discuss a deceased member’s information, who would I talk to?

Before we can speak with you, you must meet one of these criteria:

• Be listed as a joint owner
• Can legally act on behalf of their estate (probate documents required)

Sole Owner Account

If the deceased member was the only owner on the account, we'll need documentation to verify their passing and identify the individual authorized to act on behalf of the estate. The required documents may vary depending on whether a beneficiary was designated on the account.

• A copy of the death certificate 
• One of the following is required if there is no beneficiary listed on the account:
  • A certified copy of probate order
  • Small estate affidavit

Joint-Owned Account

If the account was jointly owned, the surviving account owner generally retains access to the account. To update our records, we'll need a copy of the death certificate, and we may need to retitle the account if the deceased member was listed as the primary account holder.

• A copy of the death certificate 
• Joint owners may continue to use the account, but the account may need to be retitled if primary account holder is deceased.

Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

If the deceased member owned an IRA, we'll need a copy of the death certificate to begin reviewing the account. 

Mortgage Loan

If your loved one had a mortgage with Florida Credit Union, we'll need a few documents to update our records and review the loan.  You will need to provide the following:

• A copy of the death certificate 
• Order determining homestead or Deed showing transfer of property
